Sedona Marathon
Marathon in the Red Rocks
February 4th, 2012
The Sedona Chamber of Commerce, along with the entire Sedona area, will welcome thousands of runners, their families and friends for a weekend of fierce competition and neighborly camaraderie in the world famous resort destination of Sedona, Arizona. More than 2,500 runners will participate in 5K, 10K, Half or Full Marathon races which will take the runners through the scenic Coconino National Forest District, known for its magical red rock formations, and onto the streets of what Good Morning America has chosen as one of the Top 10 most beautiful cities in the United States.  Writer/director and the star of the film Sam Jaeger, (best known for his roles in Parenthood and the film Catch & Release), and an eleven person crew set out in an RV from New York City to capture this magical comedy against the backdrop of the American landscape.

“Take Me Home” will be shown at Harkins Sedona Six Theatres on Tuesday, February 7th at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm and at Harkins Flagstaff 11 Theatres on Wednesday, February 8th at 7:00 pm. On Wednesday February 22nd, 2012 at the Sedona Performing Arts Center, the Sedona Film Festival will present the world-renowned, internationally-acclaimed Brubeck Brothers Quartet.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is an exciting jazz group featuring two members of one of America’s most accomplished musical families, Daniel Brubeck (drums,) and Chris Brubeck (bass & trombone.) Guitarist Mike DeMicco, and pianist Chuck Lamb, complete this dynamic quartet. They have performed at concert series, colleges, and jazz festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport, Detroit, Ravinia, Las Vegas, Sedona, Spokane & Monterey Jazz Festivals.

The 2012 Sedona Lecture Series, Celebrating Arizona’s Centennial” presented by The Muses and the Museum of Northern Arizona kicked off January 9th, with the presentation of Southwestern Encounters: Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton and Her Contemporaries. • 2/13/12 – Historic Trading Posts of the Western Navajo Reservation
  Join Jim Babbitt at the Sedona United Methodist Church located at 110 Indian Cliffs Road in Sedona for the presentation of Historic Trading Posts of the Western Navajo Reservation.The Atlantic & Pacific Railway opened up the vast Indian country of the Southwest to commerce and settlement. Small general merchandise stores, dubbed trading posts, sprang up across the Navajo, Hopi and Apache reservations of northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. This talk will trace the development of trading posts on the western Navajo reservation, with an emphasis on the network of posts established and operated by the Babbitt family.
• 3/12/12 – Everyday Scenes of Hopi Life
  Everyday Scenes of Hopi Life will be presented by Dr. Robert Breunig, Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona. This presentation will cover A pictorial overview of Hopi life in the early twentieth century, detailing village life and farming, and featuring photographs by Kate Cory. This lecture will take place at the Sedona United Methodist Church, 110 Indian Cliffs Road in Sedona.
• 4/09/12 – Sedona: The Centennial Era and Beyond
  One of the most spectacular places in Arizona, Sedona got a jump on the state by being founded a decade earlier. Even before that, people were discovering and adding to the community here. Author Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, who recently completed our state’s official centennial book, takes us on a stroll through Sedona’s growth, from earliest settlers to those contributing today. Please join Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, Granddaughter of Sedona Schnebly at the Sedona United Methodist Church located at 110 Indian Cliffs Road in Sedona for her presentation Sedona: The Centennial Era and Beyond.

The Muses’ Lecture Series is an annual educational program presented for the benefit of the Museum of Northern Arizona by The Muses, a Sedona-based volunteer group.  Anxiety is born out of having something to lose, when I began writing ‘Take Shelter’ in the summer of 2008, I was in the middle of my first year of marriage. Although both my career and personal life were on a positive track, I had a nagging feeling that the world at large was heading for harder times. This free-floating anxiety was part economic, part just growing up, but it mainly came from the fact that I finally had things in my life that I didn’t want to lose. Special guest Jim Connor,who wrote the gold-record hit “Grandma’s Feather Bed” for John Denver will make an appearance, and comedian Jimmy Travis will open the show with his brand of humor and music.

This show simply carries a wonderful combined message of “music and laughter”, truly the two greatest sounds to the human ear. This is just pure entertainment and escapism. If you are going to be visiting Sedona, Arizona on December the 31st there will be a very special free event taking place at the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park located at 2560 Pueblo Drive, west Sedona.

On New Year’s Eve day, from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm all are warmly invited to gather at the Amitabha Stupa to make wishes and prayers for peace in the coming year.

“If you love the Stupa, or have never been there, please come and offer your wishes for peace and unity in the world! Write your hopes and aspirations on handmade prayer flags or offer flowers and candles that will be provided,” said Ani Miranda Coates, Buddhist nun and one of the caretakers of the Stupa. Free refreshments and gifts will be given to all who attend!

 Two brief talks at 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm will take place on the history and power of stupas and their ability to bring more compassion, healing and virtue to individuals, the community and the world. Prayer flags, once written, will be hung around the Stupa.

 The Story of the Amitabha Stupa book will be available, detailing the construction phases and the mysterious and beautiful ritual objects, mantras and mandalas contained within the Stupa.

 At 2:00 pm those who are moved to share their aspirations and prayers with everyone will have an opportunity to do so. At approximately 2:30 pm everyone will be invited to circumambulate the Stupa together.

Through the compassionate intention of Jetsunma Ahkön Lhamo, spiritual director of Kunzang Palyul Choling (KPC), the Amitabha Stupa was constructed and completed in 2004. It was built as an offering to Sedona and the world.

 Members and caretakers of KPC are moving quickly to secure the 14 acres of land the Amitabha Stupa rests upon. It must be secured to ensure that it remains to benefit many generations to come. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated at this time.
