This is the perfect time of year in Sedona to hike, the weather is pleasant and you can really relax and enjoy your family as you make new discoveries in the changing desert flora. There are plenty of hikes to choose from, difficulties vary from easy to hard. Below is a list of my own favorite hikes in Sedona.

*To learn more about the hiking in Sedona visit Red Rock State Park. In fact, Red Rock State Park even offers free daily guided nature walks at 10:00 am. This is a great opportunity for children and adults alike to learn about the riparian ecosystem of Oak Creek and other aspects of the park such as plants, wildlife, geology, history and even archeology.

Tips:

Make sure to bring water on your hikes. Even the short and easy hikes can leave you needing some re-hydration.
Wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes.
Bring along a compass, map or a portable GPS
Respect the environment that you are enjoying and leave it as you found it for others to enjoy.

Spring Fling at the Verde Canyon Railroad

Enjoy a beautiful train ride with the Verde Canyon Railroad during their Spring Fling. In the Verde Canyon, spring in bloom dances to nature’s choreography. Wildflowers sway in the breeze, the Verde River shimmers along the canyon floor, and new vegetation does a quickstep toward the sun against the backdrop of crimson rock cliffs. The Verde Canyon Railroad, one of Sedona’s most popular attractions, celebrates this light-hearted season with special gala events on the four-hour, round-trip train ride from Clarkdale (about a half hour from Sedona) to Perkinsville and back. The Railroad runs their trains at 1:00pm every day but Tuesday. During their Spring Fling they present not only their spring ride through the Canyon but they also offer three specialty trains to celebrate the holidays that occur during springtime. The Lucky Leprechaun Train
March 17th.
Raise a glass of beer to toast St. Patty, let the lively background music set your feet a-jiggin’ and order up traditional Irish fare of corned beef & cabbage. Irish eyes will be shining with merriment as the train rolls by a landscape as emerald as the Isle.

The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. from Jordan Historical Park and proceeds south on Jordan Road to Mesquite Avenue.The Shamrocks in the Red Rocks Road Race begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration at 7:30 a.m. on Jordan Road. This all day festival will feature free children’s and family activities, live entertainment, food vendors and a beer garden.
Bell Rock Arts & Crafts Show March 6 & 7, 2010

The Bell Rock Arts & Crafts show located on scenic Hwy 179 in the Village of Oak Creek, offers you the opportunity to meet world renowned native and local artisans. Blazin’ M Ranch good time had by all!

Dear Mom,

We had a great time in Cottonwood last week! My family and I dropped our frowns in the bucket hanging on the fence of the Blazin’ M Ranch and proceeded on into the old west. We dressed in saloon garb provided at Olde Tyme Photos and had a sepia-tone photo taken which will live on the mantel forever, reminding us of this happy evening.After spending a few dollars on a wonderfully comfortable pair of broken-in cowboy boots, I strolled down to the Verde River for some pre-dinner birding. The dinner bell’s clanging brought me back up to the barn.

We shared our rustic picnic table with a couple from Canada who are spending the winter sunning in Arizona.After a few announcements, we followed the cowboy through the food line. I couldn’t believe that all those tasty things could fit on my tin plate! A huge, foil wrapped potato balanced in the middle of a puddle of beans and sauced up chicken, and chunky applesauce was spooned next to a spice cake. A flakey biscuit topped off the feast, and I grabbed lemonade on the way back to our table. Others had opted for the tender beef, which merited a second go-round. Good thing it is all-you-can-eat! We didn’t save room for the homemade pies, but the Canadians did, and proclaimed it among the tastiest they’d ever had.

Just when I thought that things couldn’t get much better, the lights dimmed and the Blazin’ M Cowboys took the stage. These guys are amazingly talented musicians and funny as they come! The heart-stopping finale topped off a fantastic evening. We’d had so much family fun that we forgot to pick up our frowns on the way out!

The next time you are up here around Sedona, Arizona spend an evening at one of the most popular attractions the Blazin M Ranch. It’s great family fun. I am sure you’ll love it.

Sedona Parks and Recreation has an educational and entertaining evening under the stars planned for you in their interactive “Introduction to Astronomy”. This free astronomy event will be held on March 4, 2010 from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm at the Posse Grounds Park Recreation Room located at 525 Posse Ground Road in Sedona. You will be given the opportunity to learn about the spring and summer constellations, view double stars, Mars, Saturn, nebulas and galaxies through the telescopes provided, and if you happen to bring your own telescope the team of amateur astronomers will be able to assist you in learning more about the care and set up of your equipment. The Sedona Film Festival is proud to present their 16th Annual Sedona International Film Festival “Reel Magic”. From Aiden Quinn’s “A Shine of Rainbows” to “The Greatest,” a new film by Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan, to an appearance by Oscar-winning documentary director Michael Moore and a series of family friendly movies, the 16th annual Sedona International Film Festival will bring 140 films to eight screens over seven nights. Named the “Fest to Impress” by Movie Maker Magazine, the Festival schedule includes full-length features, shorts, documentaries, animated films, foreign films and student films.
“Beyond the Call” Fundraiser for Haiti (February 26, 2010)

The Sedona International Film Festival will hold a fundraiser for Haiti relief efforts with a special showing of “Beyond the Call,” at Sedona Rouge theater located in Sedona at 2250 W. Highway 89A. The Film is about three middle aged men that are former soldiers and modern-day knights who travel the world delivering life saving humanitarian aid directly into the hands of civilians and doctors; in some of the most dangerous places on Earth, the front lines of war.
The Spirit Room (February 26, 2010)
