Red Rock State Park
Geology Hike
What better way to celebrate Earth Day than a guided Geology Hike at Red Rock State Park. Visitors can join a volunteer on Earth Day and learn why the rocks are red, where they came from, where they are going, and more. This hike includes the Eagle’s Nest Trail for a great view of the Park and the surrounding area. It’s more than a guided hike. It’s an interpretive experience for the beginner as well as the advanced geologist. The hike lasts for two to two and a half hours and has a 250 feet elevation climb. Solar Astronomy Workshops
Spend Earth Day viewing the sun through telescopes!
Join others for this unique experience of viewing the sun and its solar flairs through the lens of a telescope. J D. Maddy, President of Astronomers of the Verde Valley, will guide participants through this daytime astronomy workshop. From noon until 1:00 p.m. participants will be able to view the sun through three different telescopes. There will be a night time scope fitted with a solar filter, a Hydrogen Alpha telescope and a Calcium K telescope that only sees the ultra violet spectrum of visual light. At 1:00 p.m. there will be a mini lecture for 45 minutes followed by more time to look through the scopes. The lecture will cover topics related to the sun, such as it’s composition, cycles, mythology as well as information about the upcoming Annular Solar Eclipse on May 20. Grand Canyon National Park
Earth Day Celebration
Join in the fun at the Grand Canyon’s Earth Day Celebration taking place April 22, 2012. There will be demonstrations, games, information on local and national environmental initiatives and much more. All Earth Day activities are free of charge and will take place at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center near Mather Point between the hours of 10:00 am. and 2:00 pm. Grand Canyon Railway
Steam In the 21st Century
Join the Grand Canyon Railway in a special round-trip run to the Grand Canyon using steam locomotive No. 4960 fueled by recycled vegetable oil.
