While you are visiting Sedona on your family vacation consider taking a day trip to the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. Founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell and famous for the discovery of Pluto in 1930, the Lowell Observatory is a great way to introduce yourself and you family to the universe at a very reasonable price. During the summer months the observatory is open from 9:00am until 10:00 pm daily and offers a variety of daily activities. You can take the Mars tour, explore Percival Lowell’s Alvan Clark refractor and their historic Rotunda Library, the Pluto tour where you’ll see the Pluto Discovery Telescope as well as the research facilities.
Watch your kids face light up during the multimedia shows where the music of Mannheim Steamroller is played to computer – generated imagery in their show Heavy Astronomy: Marvels of the Cosmos. You can even view the sun through one of their specially equipped telescopes. Every evening, weather permitting you can view star clusters, the moon, Saturn & much more through their state of the art telescopes. The Lowell Observatory is located about an hour from Sedona.
