Take a Bird Walk in Sedona with Red Rock State Park

Every Wednesday and Saturday mornings at 7:00 am in the months of June, July & August you can take a guided bird walk with a naturalist at Red Rock State Park. Meet up with other bird lovers at the visitors center and enjoy a leisurely stroll through one of the most popular parks in Northern Arizona. I have taken this hike on several occasions and have enjoyed it every time. I have seen a variety of birds including a Northern Cardinal, Canyon Towhee and many beautiful finches. I am still in search of the Northern Mockingbird that will on rare occasions be present at the park in the summer. If you happen to see one, please let me know.

Tips

  • Times and days vary for guided hikes by season. Contact the park for schedule changes.
  • Some binoculars are available at the park. I suggest bringing your own.
  • Bring water when hiking in the park. Even if you are only planning a short hike, water is essential.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate layered clothing.
  • Respect the park. Do not remove anything from the park and leave no evidence of being there.

Red Rock State Park 2While vacationing is Sedona, consider visiting Red Rock State Park. Operating as both an environmental center and a nature reserve, Red Rock State Park gives us all an opportunity to enjoy scenic trails, educational presentations and guided hikes. There are numerous trails for all levels of hiking, from Smoke Trail (0.4 mi.) to Eagles Nest Trail (1.9 mi.). The trails are interconnecting and lead to Eagle’s Nest, a 300’ climb with amazing views of Sedona. When you first arrive at the park you might start with Mesquite Loop Trail. It’s easy to access and gives you a good overview of the flora, fauna and scenic views of the park. In addition to offering these great trails they are also offering guided hikes on select days, throughout the park.

  • The Geology Hike is a great opportunity to be guided by a knowledgeable park volunteer discussing the geology of the area and the rock formations. This is a two to two and a half hour hike with a 250 foot elevation climb and includes the Eagle’s Nest Trail.
  • A one and a half to two hour Guided Nature Walk is offered daily at kinglet10am.This walk will educate you on the ecosystem of Oak Creek and other park aspects.
  • You will walk along Oak Creek’s riparian habitat with the guided Bird Hikes that are offered Saturdays and Wednesdays. This is a favorite hike of mine in the winter. I am always on the lookout for a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
