Marathon in the Red Rocks

The Sedona Chamber of Commerce, along with the entire Sedona area, will welcome thousands of runners, their families and friends for a weekend of fierce competition and neighborly camaraderie in the world famous resort destination of Sedona, Arizona. More than 2,500 runners will participate in 5K, 10K, Half or Full Marathon races which will take the runners through the scenic Coconino National Forest District, known for its magical red rock formations, and onto the streets of what Good Morning America has chosen as one of the Top 10 most beautiful cities in the United States.  Writer/director and the star of the film Sam Jaeger, (best known for his roles in Parenthood and the film Catch & Release), and an eleven person crew set out in an RV from New York City to capture this magical comedy against the backdrop of the American landscape.

“Take Me Home” will be shown at Harkins Sedona Six Theatres on Tuesday, February 7th at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm and at Harkins Flagstaff 11 Theatres on Wednesday, February 8th at 7:00 pm. Just when you think the Sedona International Film Festival can’t get any better they bust out with Wednesday “Jazz Stretch” a cool new event! On Wednesday February 22nd, 2012 at the Sedona Performing Arts Center, the Sedona Film Festival will present the world-renowned, internationally-acclaimed Brubeck Brothers Quartet.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is an exciting jazz group featuring two members of one of America’s most accomplished musical families, Daniel Brubeck (drums,) and Chris Brubeck (bass & trombone.) Guitarist Mike DeMicco, and pianist Chuck Lamb, complete this dynamic quartet. They have performed at concert series, colleges, and jazz festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport, Detroit, Ravinia, Las Vegas, Sedona, Spokane & Monterey Jazz Festivals.

Verde River

Verde River Greenway and State Natural Area
2011-B Kestrel Road, Cottonwood, AZ 86326
The Greenway encompasses nearly 480 acres and is six miles long. The 3,300 foot elevation means mild temperatures for hiking along the Verde, canoeing, picnicking, fishing, or just wading in the cool water. Life along the river changes with the season, giving visitors a glimpse of great blue heron, black hawks, coyotes, raccoons, mule deer, beavers, ducks, frogs, and toads. The Verde River and surrounding riparian corridor support nearly twenty threatened or endangered species including river otter, southwestern bald eagles, southwestern willow flycatchers, and lowland leopard frogs. The Verde River Greenway State Natural Area is located next to Dead Horse Ranch State Park at 2011-B Kestrel Road in Cottonwood. Guided Bird Walk & Geology Hikes
01/14 – Guide Bird Walk (9:00 am)
Meet up with other bird lovers at the visitors center and enjoy a leisurely stroll through one of the most popular parks in Northern Arizona . Bird enthusiasts can join a naturalist for a “Guided Bird Walk”. Beginning as well as advanced birders are welcome. Rangers recommend that visitors being their own binoculars. A limited number are available for loan from the Park.
01/15 – Geology Hike (2:00 pm)
Join a volunteer on a guided geology hike on the second Sunday of December to learn why the rocks are red, where they came from, where they are going, and more. This hike includes the Eagle’s Nest Trail for a great view of the Park and surrounding area. It is more than a guided hike! It is an interpretive experience for the beginner as well as advanced geologist, lasting two to two-and-a- half hours, with a 250 feet elevation climb.

Grab your hiking boots and visit Sedona, Arizona this weekend for a guided geology hike with Red Rock State Park on Sunday January 15th, 2012.

This Sedona hike gives you the opportunity to learn from your knowledgeable guide about the geology of Sedona; what causes the red/rust coloring of the rocks, how the formation of the red rocks occurred and where exactly the red rocks came from. This hike includes the Eagle’s Nest Trail for a great view of the Park and surrounding area.

Sedona is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, an escarpment that runs east/west through the middle of Arizona. The Rim, which is about 200 miles long, ranges between 2,000 and 3,000 feet in height. Erosion has slowly eaten away at the rim, moving it northward about four miles and leaving behind some of the most spectacular and picturesque canyons and buttes in the world. – Red Rock State Park

More than a guided hike, this is an interpretive experience for the beginner as well as advanced geologist. You will also be able to get some great panoramic views of the park and its red rocks, so make sure to bring your camera! . Reservations, and more information for the hike, can be found at Red Rock State Park. Red Rock State Park is located at 4050 Red Rock Loop Road in Sedona, Arizona.

Tips:

• Be prepared, this hike takes anywhere from 2 – 2 1/2 hours with close to 250 feet climb in elevation.

• Wear shoes appropriate for hiking

• 2/13/12 – Historic Trading Posts of the Western Navajo Reservation
  Join Jim Babbitt at the Sedona United Methodist Church located at 110 Indian Cliffs Road in Sedona for the presentation of Historic Trading Posts of the Western Navajo Reservation.The Atlantic & Pacific Railway opened up the vast Indian country of the Southwest to commerce and settlement. Small general merchandise stores, dubbed trading posts, sprang up across the Navajo, Hopi and Apache reservations of northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. This talk will trace the development of trading posts on the western Navajo reservation, with an emphasis on the network of posts established and operated by the Babbitt family.
• 3/12/12 – Everyday Scenes of Hopi Life
  Everyday Scenes of Hopi Life will be presented by Dr. Robert Breunig, Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona. This presentation will cover A pictorial overview of Hopi life in the early twentieth century, detailing village life and farming, and featuring photographs by Kate Cory. This lecture will take place at the Sedona United Methodist Church, 110 Indian Cliffs Road in Sedona.
• 4/09/12 – Sedona: The Centennial Era and Beyond
  One of the most spectacular places in Arizona, Sedona got a jump on the state by being founded a decade earlier. Even before that, people were discovering and adding to the community here. Author Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, who recently completed our state’s official centennial book, takes us on a stroll through Sedona’s growth, from earliest settlers to those contributing today. Please join Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, Granddaughter of Sedona Schnebly at the Sedona United Methodist Church located at 110 Indian Cliffs Road in Sedona for her presentation Sedona: The Centennial Era and Beyond.

The Muses’ Lecture Series is an annual educational program presented for the benefit of the Museum of Northern Arizona by The Muses, a Sedona-based volunteer group. All lectures are at 7:00 pm. at the Sedona United Methodist Church, 110 Indian Cliffs Road in Sedona. Tickets are $6 Members/$7 Nonmembers per lecture.
