The Verde Canyon Railroad is a buzz with activity this weekend.
Santa Claus Express – Sat. & Sun
The Every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from December 1-21, the Santa Claus Express pulls away from the depot with two VIEs (Very Important Elves) aboard. Santa and Mrs. Claus entertain passengers throughout the Verde Canyon Railroad’s four-hour journey singing carols and handing out Mrs. Claus’ homemade cookies. As their train rumbles through the colorful Verde Canyon, kids of all ages, sizes and gender enjoy Santa reciting excerpts from Twas the Night Before Christmas. A stress-filled holiday season melts away as you sit back, relax and soak in one of Arizona’s winter wonderlands.
Liberty Wildlife – Sat.
The Verde Canyon Railroad offers you the opportunity to get up close and personal with the feathered friends from Scottsdale-based Liberty Wildlife and share the magic of rescued birds of prey. You can ask handlers questions and take photographs of these wonderful birds on the depot patio prior to the trains departure at 1:00 pm. Be sure to arrive early to spend time around these beautiful creatures. Sonora, a very sociable juvenile bald eagle, loves to visit. With wings outstretched and eyes scanning the horizon, she mesmerizes everyone with her fondness for people.
“Artists in Residence”  – Sat. & Sun
Give yourself a gift this holiday season and celebrate creativity at Verde Canyon Railroad. Interact with local artists, jewelers and authors at the depot during the railroads special Artists in Residence weekends this winter shadows.This weeend the Box Car Gift Store will feature one of the popular denizens of its jewelry cases, Cottonwood resident Pat Gibble. If you love poetry and film and are looking for something fun to do in Sedona on July 26th, 2011 you don’t want to miss this special one-night Sedona event filled with an evening of incredible poetry and the award winning film “Louder Than a Bomb “presented by the Sedona International Film Festival.

This event will be taking place at the Sedona Performing Arts Center at Red Rock High School at 7:00 pm. You will be treated to live poetry performances by members of NorAZ Poets, Sedona Red Rock High School poetry team members and other award-winning poets from Sedona and the Verde Valley. Co-director/producer Jon Siskel will also be in Sedona to host the premiere and conduct a Q&A discussion following the screening of the award winning “Louder Than a Bomb”

“Louder Than a Bomb” is a film about passion, competition, teamwork, and trust. It’s about the joy of being young, and the pain of growing up. It’s about speaking out, making noise, and finding your voice. It also just happens to be about poetry. This event will kick off the Sedona International Film Festivals “Docs That Make a Difference” series, which will run every Tuesday for six weeks.

“This is the perfect film to kick off our documentary series — it will have you on your feet cheering several times before the credits roll! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate poetry, film and the arts all in one night!” - Festival Director Patrick Schweiss.

Tickets for this outstanding evening of entertainment are $12, or $9 for Film Festival members, and will be available starting at 6:00 pm. that day in the theater lobby. Meet the friendly staff of Sedona Adventure tour sat the Beasley Flats Recreation Area on the lush Verde River where you will board their shuttle with all your gear and head upstream to the put-in and let the fun begin! Have fun with epic water fights with water cannons provided by Sedona Adventure Tours, as you ‘leisurely’ float downstream! Expect to get lots of sun and very wet! 6/15/11 – Red Rock State Park – Moonlight Hikes

Red Rock State Park’s very popular Moonlight Hike includes a naturalist-led interpretive hike on the park’s beautiful trails. Enjoy the sunset and moonrise from an overlook and return by the light of the moon. The hike lasts for approximately 2 to 2-2½ hours, has an elevation climb of 200-250 feet and covers 2 miles. The Park recommends that you come through the gate approximately 30 minutes before the starting time to ensure your participation. No late arrivals will be allowed to join the hike. Reservations are required. A $5.00 per person program fee will be charged at the time of the reservation. There is also a $10.00 entrance fee to the Park for a car of four adults. The Sedona Arts Center is proud to present the second of a summer of elements, “Water”! When you are looking for some family fun things to do in Sedona in March the Sedona International Film Festival has the ticket for you. The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to partner with the National Performing Artists for the first live concert and performance at the new Sedona Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 27th.

The show will feature the Sedona debut of world-renowned, international performing sensations The Marlins and the “British Trickster” Nick Lewin. Both acts are currently appearing together on a back-by-popular demand tour of Arizona and the Southwest where they have been playing to sold-out venues and rousing standing ovations. Lewin has also just completed a wildly successful run headlining his own show in Las Vegas.

“This is outrageous fun for the whole family! We are thrilled and honored to present this hilarious, enjoyable show and to partner with the National Performing Artists to bring the first live show to our new, extraordinary performing arts venue.” – Patrick Schweiss, festival director.

This show filled with music and laughter is a celebration of the recent 17th annual Sedona International Film Festival and a fundraiser for the organization’s youth and film scholarship programs.

From November 5th through the 19th, Tlaquepaque invites you to the Sedona Visual Arts Coalition 10th Annual Fall Exhibition Show “Pathways” in the Sala de Milagro Ballroom above RENÉ’s restaurant.

“Pathways” will feature more than 70 Sedona artists with a variety of styles and mediums including paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, mixed media, ceramics, and glass art! You are sure to find that special work of art that inspires your own creativity.
